    The latest leaked audio recording, which reportedly led to the ban, appears to show top government officials discussing a potential attack on the tomb of Suleyman Shah, the grandfather of the founder of the Ottoman Empire.

    The tomb is in Syrian territory, but protected by Turkish soldiers.

    On the tape, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu is heard to say that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan sees any attack as an "opportunity" to increase Turkish presence in Syria, where it has staunchly supported the anti-Assad rebels. Security chief Hakan Fidan then goes one step further, and suggests staging a fake attack to give Turkey a casus belli to intervene in the conflict.

    What makes me indeed worried is the fact that just a year before that, I was asked by the BBC whether I was jealous of the Egyptians, now that they have, as the interviewer of the BBC said, democracy and they can choose their leader, something you, Russians, can’t do. I think that the huge responsibility for what happened and for the tragedy that Egypt is going through is with the western countries which were so enthusiastic, I would say enthusiastically stupid about the so-called revolution in 2011, and unfortunately what we are seeing in Egypt right now is the consequence of the so-called revolution, probably not the worst consequence, because the military actually took over power in July last year. There were more pogroms from the so-called protesters, and the pogroms targeted, even the Guardian admits it, not only the government offices and police stations but also churches. So, what we see is the worst possible outcome. We have indeed the Islamists on one side who target churches and we have the government which sentenced more than 500 people to death in one day.

    That is truly a sad situation. What do you think the political consequences of this decision will be?

    You probably will be surprised but if you read the western press, the situation in Crimea is a lot more tragic than the situation in Egypt. So, probably the West will not react to the events in Egypt in any way, at least I don’t expect the Egyptian military to get any cuts in their financing from the US. So, the western governments will just say that this is sad, but there will be not nearly as much indignation as over the referendum in Crimea, where not a single person was killed. And, of course, if you look at the figures, what Egypt is going through, it is just an immense human tragedy, even during several seat-ins, the protests organized by the students in the last few months, 600 people were killed and 300 soldiers and policemen were killed in attacks organized by the Islamists. So, what we have is actually a small civil war brewing without being announced and somehow the West doesn’t feel even a tiny bit of responsibility for basically encouraging the revolution that led to this kind of situation.

    I see lots of parallels in this situation. And since you did mention Ukraine, I wanted to skip Egypt for just a second and turn to Ukraine and Egypt in a sense. What do you think geopolitically more important for the West – Ukraine or Egypt at this time?

    The problem is that the West is absolutely intransigent and whenever you hear their rhetoric, you might imagine that the existence of the West depends on Ukraine having Crimea, or on Egypt being pro-American and not pro-Soviet, as it was in the 1970s. But clearly I think there was a lot of irresponsible behavior from the West because actually if you look at the consequences, I mean Egypt under Mubarak was not an epitome of democracy but hundreds of people were not killed. So, I would say that the parallel with Ukraine is the following: the US supports some kind of revolution, the US says that this revolution is going to change the country for the better. It says the new government will be much better than the old one, it will be inclusive. In reality the US and the EU do not understand anything, neither in the government in Egypt, nor in the government in Ukraine, radicals come to power, there is bloodshed, but there is complete impunity and total absence of repentance in the West as if they were not involved, as if they didn’t have anything to do with this revolution which now brought Egypt hundreds of corpses in the same way with Ukraine. I hear from the American officials "we are sure the new government in Ukraine will be inclusive, it won’t include fascists". It will unfortunately because the Americans do not understand anything in Ukraine fascists, they don’t see them.

  • How much money is laundered per year?

    By its very nature, money laundering is an illegal activity carried out by criminals which occurs outside of the normal range of economic and financial statistics. Along with some other aspects of underground economic activity, rough estimates have been put forward to give some sense of the scale of the problem.

    The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) conducted a study to determine the magnitude of illicit funds generated by drug trafficking and organised crimes and to investigate to what extent these funds are laundered. The report estimates that in 2009, criminal proceeds amounted to 3.6% of global GDP, with 2.7% (or USD 1.6 trillion) being laundered.

    This falls within the widely quoted estimate by the International Monetary Fund, who stated in 1998 that the aggregate size of money laundering in the world could be somewhere between two and five percent of the world’s gross domestic product. Using 1998 statistics, these percentages would indicate that money laundering ranged between USD 590 billion and USD 1.5 trillion. At the time, the lower figure was roughly equivalent to the value of the total output of an economy the size of Spain.

    However, the above estimates should be treated with caution. They are intended to give an estimate of the magnitude of money laundering. Due to the illegal nature of the transactions, precise statistics are not available and it is therefore impossible to produce a definitive estimate of the amount of money that is globally laundered every year. The FATF therefore does not publish any figures in this regard.

    At the 2010 annual “SIGDEV” gathering of the “Five Eyes” surveillance alliance comprising the UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, and the US, discussion focused on developing methods for the purpose of “discrediting” foreign governments by secretly exploiting social media for “propaganda,” “deception,” “mass messaging,” and “pushing stories,” Greenwald reveals.

    A retired Georgian general alleges that the snipers who shot people on Kiev's Maidan in February were former defense and security officials from the structures of Georgia's former president Mikheil Saakashvili. Tristan Tsitelashvili said on Rossiya 1 television on Wednesday that he knows the names of four of those snipers and the materials on the matter he has collected will be sent to the Georgian prosecutors.

    "There were four Georgians there. We have their names and we know they worked in the defense and security structures under Saakashvili. We have all the information: when they left for Ukraine, when their headquarters was created, where it was located, and where they received special assignments," Tsitelashvili said.

    Tsitelashvili said the group of Georgian snipers in Kyiv was led by Giya Baramadze and Givi Targamadze.
