  • 《Don't understand why Barkha Dutt's recent speech in the The Telegraph debate is being shared/re-tweeted by left of centre liberals.
    There is nothing new in Barkha's speech. This position which fails to question what is going on in the Manipur and Kashmir (and in Chhattisgarh) in name of physical integrity which the students had the guts to ask and if they are refining their position a bit it is probably because one guy is in parole and the others are inside. Barkha happens to have the loudest (within boundaries of civility that is) microphone as a respected journalist, she says she can question supreme court judgements, that is indeed great, but even a retired judge is saying that and honestly the profession of law is about quoting precedence and then surpassing it so Barkha's rhetoric stays too safe within what is considered permissible in the framework of nationalism. 
    To say in 2016 when the aftermath of 2008 crisis is still being felt and another one is being precipitated, that one is a free marketeer and then claiming that it is indeed a position of centre is bizarre and and if not outright biased or even a dishonest shield that helps her industry in keeping working ties with the big business a sizeable chunk of which benefits from and influences policy. I would question her network channel's position in war reporting in Kargil as well, though it was brave. it was 1960s vietnam style embedded reporting repeated during Iraq war in early 2000s. Frankly the reporters on ground were not questioning militarisation itself, they were reporting operations, which is what you expect from world class reporting. the names Frisk, Hislum, Ragey and Snow should come to mind. That question mind you could have done a lot of service to democratic forces in Pakistan. I do admit of course later the channel Barkha is on was less zingoistic while reporting on foreign policy. The question here is why does one need to proclaim support for 'our boys out there'  in order to question politics of militarisation, what glory is there in art science and profession of war when the hardware procurement budget is plain indefensible and when the army has practically a free hold in Kashmir and Manipur. Mind you Kashmir voted in high 60s in percentage for the last Panachayat election, yet there is no systemic redressal on complaints of encounters and hardly any commanding officer is ever made accountable. Please remember women and teengers are not spared and one needs to clearly state that, if Yasin Malik's disgusting decimation of the pandits can be attacked ideologically, it can only be attacked from a position against arms race in favour of upholding of civil rights. I find it funny that Sharmila Irom has to come and support various capital figures of resistance from time to time, kejriwal or kanhaiya in order to be in news, the only other left for her is to die to shame the AFSPA and its history of genocide. She is one of the senior figures of resistance in independent India and she has to offer support to a kid in order to stay in news, such are the ways of our capitol hill. 
    Now let us come to the other point. Her accommodtion of Mamata as a figure of in Kolkata was unbelievable within years of her role in lalgarh and generally against democratic movements, particularly where the youth or educational institutions are involved. Yes mamata has been practicing her strange brand of secularism, which includes giving handouts to priests and out of circulation news papers which in a backhanded manner encourages phoney disbursements to buy allegiance, but to see her as a saviour of tolerance towards secularism is bizarre. lets face it, never mind nitish babu, rahul gandhi or azam khan or even the new posh voice from hyderabad, there are no friends of muslims in our country period. yes there are sympathetic writers, great writers and theoreticians, but for muslims, unfortunately it is their physical existence that is part of their resistance. if they were not 28% in West Bengal I am not sure how many of mainstream politicians would have cared about them after the ideological nudge nudge winking between mosque breakers and free marketeers. in the aftermath of 1992 and Gujrat in some ghettos, I am sure it is a Ramallah like situation, if not Gaza. The only remaining power of resistance is their physical existence, in face of exclusion from jobs in sectors where there are jobs, in face of exclusion from higher education. that is a position that can only be understood by adivasis, dalits manipuris and kashmiris. new alignments are needed in our country, probably kanhaiya, umar and ban can do it in next 2-3 decades. rhetorics, however liberal, within frameworks of nationalism is now impossible, azadi is the new framework, I have a sneaking suspicion, Barkha is too intelligent not to realise it. I just hope she continues to report from that emerging front. 

    So yes I guess I need to reiterate I have nothing against Barkha or her articulate position. I just think it is not good enough to ensure tolerance in our society, in our country and indeed in political conversation. The students clearly have more punch in their position and that is exactly why a lot of them are in the fucking jail. I have serious problems with young left liberals considering Barkha's speech worthy of a share or a retweet, though I will be a fool not to admit, she probably was their best chance to be partly heard that evening》

    প্লাস অল্প জালি করে একটা দশ টাকার কুপন, যেটা ভবিষ্যতে কেনাকাটার উপর পাওয়ার কথা ছিল, সেটাও লাগিয়ে দিলাম।

    তবে কিনা জিনিসটা খুব পছন্দ হয়েছে, আর আমার সাইজেও হয়েছে (জেটা জ্যাকেটের ক্ষেত্রে পাওয়া কঠিন)
