  • ছুটি তো ৩ দিন। আর শনি-রবি-২৩জানুয়ারি মিলে মোট ৬ দিন। তাতেও শুনেছিলাম 'খুব চাপ হবে ৩ দিন ছুটি'। পাত্তা দেইনি।

    I am exultant at being alive. Being raped was terrible beyond words, but I think being alive is more important. When a woman is denied the right to feel this, there is something very wrong in our value system. When someone is mugged and allows herself to be beaten in order to survive, no one thinks she is guilty of willing consent to be beaten. In the case of rape, a woman is asked why she let them do it, why she did not resist, whether she enjoyed it.

    Too many others will never experience that. They will not see that it gets better, that the day comes when one incident is no longer the central focus of your life. One day you find you are no longer looking behind you, expecting every group of men to attack. One day you wind a scarf around your throat without having a flashback to being choked. One day you are not frightened anymore.

    Rape is horrible. But it is not horrible for all the reasons that have been drilled into the heads of Indian women. It is horrible because you are violated, you are scared, someone else takes control of your body and hurts you in the most intimate way. It is not horrible because you lose your “virtue.” It is not horrible because your father and your brother are dishonored. I reject the notion that my virtue is located in my vagina, just as I reject the notion that men’s brains are in their genitals.

  • সম্মতির যুক্তি যেহেতু এই মামলাতে রেপ অ্যাকিউজডকে ডিফেন্ড করার কাজে আসবে না কাজেই ধরে নেব যে, কথাগুলো মেয়েদের বিষয়ে এই 'ভদ্রলোকের' মানসিক অবস্থান সূচনা করে। উপরন্তু কথাগুলো তিনি কোর্টের মধ্যে বলেন নি, বাইরে বলেছেন। এর বিরুদ্ধে আমাদের দেশের সমাজ সংস্কারকদের কোনও রিঅ্যাকশন দেখলাম না। মর্মাহত হলাম।

    লিখতে পারলে হয়তো অনেকটা এরকমই লিখতাম। বিশেষতঃ অঞ্চলভিত্তিক অনুসন্ধান আর সমাধানের অংশে সম্পূর্ণ সহমত।
    তবে কেউ কি তার নিজের কাজটুকু ঠিকঠাক করে? করলে অগ্নিকান্ডই বলুন, কি হসপিটাল অ্যাকোয়ার্ড ইন্ফেকশান কি ধর্ষণ-বহুক্ষেত্রেই নিবারণযোগ্য, অথচ ঘটেই চলে।

    Verma panel says no to death penalty

    .....Presenting the report on ‘Amendments to Criminal Law’, Mr. Verma said at a time when there were talks of abolishing the death sentence, the committee has “enhanced the punishment to mean the remainder of life”. An overwhelming majority of scholars and women’s organisations told the committee they were strongly against death penalty...

    “According to the Working Group on Human Rights, the murder rate has declined consistently in India over the last 20 years despite the slowdown in the execution of death sentences since 1980. Hence we do take note of the argument that introduction of death penalty for rape may not have a deterrent effect,” the Committee recommended....

    The Committee said castration would be unconstitutional and inconsistent with basic human rights treaties to expose any citizen without their consent to potentially dangerous medical side effects....

    The Committee has criticised lack of reformatory and rehabilitation policies in jails and juvenile homes.
