  • Head Gear

    In professional boxing, the fighters don’t wear head gear during a match, but they do wear it when sparring. In the amateurs, head gear is always worn during a match.

    Rounds

    In professional matches, the rounds are three minutes long and the bouts can last anywhere between four and twelve rounds.
    In the amateurs, the bouts are either three or four rounds long. In the four-round fights, the rounds are two minutes long.

    Ring

    There are no set rules for the size of a boxing ring in the pro ranks. Amateur rings have a minimum size of 16 x 16 feet and a maximum of 20 x 20 feet.

    Scoring

    In professional boxing, each round is scored by the judges on a 10-point system. This means the winner of the round must be given 10 points, while the loser of the round must be given nine or less. An even round would be 10 - 10. However, sometimes points are deducted from a boxer by the referee because of fouling. In this case, you could see a nine - nine round or a nine - eight round and so on.

    In amateur boxing, there are either three or five judges who use an electronic tally counter or something similar to keep track of the number of legal scoring blows by each boxer. One device is used for each boxer. At the end of the round the number of scoring punches is added up and at the end of the bout the boxer who scored the most legal punches is declared the winner. In some amateur competitions, a draw is also possible.

    Effective Punching

    In professional boxing you may hit your opponent above the belt, as long as it is on the side or front of the head or body. It’s illegal to strike somebody on the back of the head and in the kidneys.

    A scoring blow in amateur boxing must land directly with the knuckle part of the closed glove on the front or side of the opponent’s head or body and must also be above the belt.

    Ending the Match

    In amateur boxing, there are several ways to win a match. The simplest ways are to knock your opponent out or outscore him or her on points. However, there are numerous other scenarios in which an amateur bout can end. These are:

    If both boxers are injured or knocked down at the same time and can’t continue, then the bout will go to the scorecards. Whoever was leading is declared the winner.
    If either boxer is bleeding (or if one boxer is bleeding and the other has an open cut or abrasion), the fight can be stopped by the referee and the bout will go to the scorecards.
    If a boxer retires between rounds or during the fight, then his or her opponent is declared the winner.
    If a boxer is in serious trouble during the match, the referee will consider him or her to be outclassed and may stop the contest, awarding the bout to their opponent.
    If a boxer is being outscored by a wide margin, the fight may be stopped in the last round. This often happens when one boxer has a huge lead. Depending on the competition, this could be a 15- or 20-point lead.
    If a boxer can’t continue because of an injury or sickness, his or her opponent will be declared the winner. The ringside physician can request the fight to be stopped if he or she thinks it shouldn’t carry on for medical reasons.
    If a male boxer receives three compulsory counts (similar to a standing eight count) in the same round or four counts throughout the same match, it must be stopped. In women’s amateur boxing, the match will be stopped after two compulsory counts in the same round or three counts in the match.
    If a boxer is disqualified, his or her opponent will be declared the winner. You can be disqualified for not making the weight limit and or for receiving three warnings during a match. It is also possible for both boxers to be disqualified.
    A bout may be considered to be a no-contest if an outside occurrence interferes with the match. This could be something like a power failure, an equipment problem or weather conditions.
    If a boxer fails to show up for his or her bout and their opponent is in the ring and ready to start, the boxer who is prepared to box will be awarded the victory by a walkover. This will happen after the bell rings and two minutes pass.

    Pro Box

    If all three judges score the bout for a boxer then he or she is awarded a unanimous decision.
    If two judges score the bout for boxer A and the third judge scores it for boxer B, then boxer A wins by a split decision.
    If one judge scores the bout for boxer A, one judge scores the bout for boxer B and the third judge has it even, then the bout is declared a draw.
    If two judges score the bout for boxer A and the third scores it even, the bout is awarded to boxer A by a majority decision.
    If two judges have the bout even, then the decision is a majority draw.
    If all three judges have scored the bout even, then it is a draw.
    Other Scenarios

    A boxer could win the match if their opponent is disqualified by the referee for repeated fouling.
    A boxer can win a match if their opponent has a bad cut and the blood is affecting his or her vision. In this case, the referee or ringside physician will stop the bout.
    A boxer could win the match by disqualification if anybody from their opponent’s corner enters the ring or climbs on the ring apron.
    In most professional boxing matches, if a boxer suffers a cut or an injury from an accidental head butt and the bout has to be stopped before the fourth round is completed, then it’s ruled a no-decision or a technical draw. If the bout has reached the fifth round it will then usually go to the judges’ scorecards for a decision. This is known as a technical decision.
    If a boxer A knocks his or her opponent to the ring canvas and the boxer isn’t able to get up by the count of 10, then boxer A is awarded a knockout (KO).
    If the referee stops the bout because boxer A is dishing out too much punishment to boxer B, then boxer A is awarded a technical knockout (TKO).
    In some professional bouts, there is a three-knockdown rule. In this case, if boxer B is knocked to the canvas three times in the same round, the fight is automatically awarded to boxer A by a TKO. A knockdown occurs when any part of a boxer’s body (knee, hand, elbow) other than his feet touches the canvas.
    If a boxer suffers a serious injury (like a broken ankle) and can’t continue, then his or her opponent is awarded the victory. However, this is sometimes ruled a no-contest after being reviewed by a boxing organization.
    If a boxer quits on the stool between rounds or during a round, their opponent will be awarded a TKO.
    If something outside of the ring (power failure, bad weather, damage to the ring) causes the bout to be stopped, then it is generally ruled as a no-contest.
