    Soros was born in Budapest in the Kingdom of Hungary to a well-to-do non-observant Jewish family, who, like many upper-middle class Hungarian Jews at the time, were uncomfortable with their roots. Soros has described his home as antisemitic.[23] His mother Erzsébet (also known as Elizabeth) came from a family that owned a thriving silk shop. In Hungarian, soros means "next in line," or "designated successor"; in Esperanto it means "will soar."[30]

    Soros was 13 years old in March 1944 when Nazi Germany occupied Hungary.[31] Jewish children were barred from attending school by the Nazis, and Soros and the other schoolchildren were made to report to the Judenrat ("Jewish Council") which had been established during the occupation. Soros later described this time to writer Michael Lewis: "The Jewish Council asked the little kids to hand out the deportation notices. I was told to go to the Jewish Council. And there I was given these small slips of paper.... I took this piece of paper to my father. He instantly recognized it. This was a list of Hungarian Jewish lawyers. He said, "You deliver the slips of paper and tell the people that if they report they will be deported."[32][33]

    Soros did not return to that job; his family purchased documents to say that they were Christians, thereby allowing them to survive the war. Later that year at age 14, Soros posed as the Christian godson of an official of the collaborationist Hungarian government's Ministry of Agriculture, who himself had a Jewish wife in hiding. On one occasion, rather than leave the 14 year old alone, the official took Soros with him while he inventoried a rich Jewish family's estate, though Soros did not take part. Tivadar not only saved his immediate family but also many other Hungarian Jews, and George would later write that 1944 had been "the happiest [year] of his life," for it had given him the opportunity to witness his father's heroism.[34][35] In 1945, Soros survived the Siege of Budapest in which Soviet and German forces fought house to house through the city.

    At least 16 Americans associated with the U.S. Embassy in Havana suffered symptoms from attacks on their health in Cuba that have still not been explained, the United States said Thursday.

    Until now, the U.S. had not disclosed the number of Americans believed to be affected by the attacks, which caused a variety of symptoms including unexplained loss of hearing. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the "incidents" are no longer occurring. U.S. officials have said the symptoms started in the fall of 2016 and were last reported in April.

    Earlier, U.S. officials had said the symptoms appeared to have resulted from a covert sonic device. But Nauert said no device has been found so far. The U.S. still hasn't identified the perpetrator, and Nauert said that Cuba is cooperating with the U.S. investigation.

    The Magellan pipeline company reportedly closed the crude oil and refined product pipeline in Houston with remaining refineries expected to be closed as well.

    According to an Oil Express news alert, refining plants owned by Flint Hills, Valero, and Citgo were due for controlled shutdowns.

    Earlier on Thursday, a warplane believed to belong to the U.S. coalition was flying at a low altitude in the desert of Albulel, 25 km from a town under the same name in eastern Deir al-Zour, said the Observatory, adding that when people came later to the area they found shaved hair on the ground, in what appeared to be for five people.

    On Tuesday, a similar airdrop was carried out likely by the coalition in eastern Deir al-Zour, and the forces targeted two houses used by the IS as munition depots, said the Observatory, which says it relies on a network of activists on the ground.

    Windows machines are targeted by the CIA under ‘Angelfire,’ according to the latest release from WikiLeaks’ ‘Vault7’ series. The documents detail an implant that can allow Windows machines to create undetectable libraries.

    ‘Angelfire’ consists of five components – ‘Solartime,’‘Wolfcreek,’ ‘Keystone,’ ‘BadMFS,’ and the ‘Windows Transitory File system,’ according to a statement from WikiLeaks released on Thursday.

    ‘Solartime’ modifies the partition boot sector of Windows XP or Windows 7 machines when installed, allowing the ‘Wolfcreek’ implant to load and execute. ‘Wolfcreek’ can then load and execute other ‘Angelfire’ implants.

    Previously known as ‘MagicWand,’ ‘Keystone’ loads malicious user applications on the machine which never touch the file system, leaving “very little forensic evidence that the process ever ran” according to WikiLeaks.
