    তাহলে এখন পর্যন্ত ক্যানিবাল নিয়ে কলম্বাসের ব্যাপারটা দাঁড়িয়েছে -আমি তারে চোখে দেখিনি, অল্প অল্প শুনেছি - টাইপের। তার পর কী হয়?

    ২৩শে নভেম্বর তারিখে কলম্বাস ওনার লগবুকে cannibals শব্দটা ঢুকিয়ে দিয়েছেন। কিন্তু নিজেরই কি একটু সন্দেহ আছে ঐ শব্দটা নিয়ে? ২৬ শে নভেম্বর তারিখে লেখেন He thought that the country he now saw in the south-east direction from the Cabo de Campana was the island which the Indians called Bohio: it appears so to him because the said cape is separated from that land. All the people that he has found up to the present time, he says are in great fear of the people of Caniba or Canima, and they say they live on this island of Bohio.

    peopl of Caniba or Canima ! তাহলে ঐ মানুষখেকো লোকগুলোর নাম কী Cannibal নয়? দ্বীপের নামটা Caniba? তাহলে বোহিও-র কী হবে?

    মানুষখেকোদের নিয়ে সন্দেহটা কলম্বাসের মনে বাড়তেই থাকে এবং ১২ই ডিসেম্বর তারিখে মোটামুটি নি:সন্দিগ্‌ধ হয়ে লিখে ফেলেন and so I repeat as I have said at other times (he says) that Caniba is no other than the people of the Great Khan who must be very near here and have ships and come to capture these people, and as the captives do not return they believe they have eaten them.। অর্থাৎ, যাদের মানুষখেকো বলে বিভিন্ন দ্বীপের লোকেরা ভয় পাচ্ছে তারা আদতে Great Khan-এরই লোক এবং যেহেতু Great Khan যথেষ্ট পরিমাণে সভ্য, প্রচুর তার ধনরত্ন, প্রভাব-প্রতিপত্তি অতএব তার লোকজনেরা মানুষখেকো হতেই পারে না!

    ১৭ই ডিসেম্বর: কিন্তু দোটানার শেষ নেই। লগবুকে লেখা হয় It blew that night strongly, the wind being east-north-east but the sea did not change much, because the Isla de la Tortuga which is in front of it and makes a shelter for it, protected and guarded it .......     ২৬শে ডিসেম্বর: ইতিমধ্যে Cacique নামে এক গোষ্ঠীর সাথে কলম্বাসের দলের আলাপ পরিচয় হয়েছে। ঐ গোষ্ঠীর রাজার সাথে জাহাজে বসে কলম্বাসের খাওয়াদাওয়া চলছে। রাজাটা ভাল - By his manner of eating, his honesty and his exquisite cleanliness, he showed himself to be of good birth.। রাজাটা সৎ। কেন? এইজন্যই কী যে একটু আগে The King was delighted to see the Admiral pleased and he understood that he desired a great deal of gold and he told him by signs that he knew where there was a great amount of it near there, and that he must be of good cheer for he would give him as much gold as he wished. The Admiral says he did all this that the King might consider the Christians he was leaving as friends and also that he might fear them.

    তো এখন পর্যন্ত একটা কথা বলাই যায় Cannibal/Carib-দের নিয়ে ছবিটা একটু বদলে গেছে। তারা শুধু মানুষই খায় না, অন্যান্য নেটিভ যাদের সাথে কলম্বাসের আলাপ হয়েছে, তাদের থেকে একটু বেশী যুদ্ধবাজ, অস্ত্রের ব্যবহার জানে। অন্য গোষ্ঠীগুলোর মত নরমপ্রকৃতির নয়। ফলত: দরকারে তাদের ধরেবেঁধে নিয়ে যেতে হতে পারে। কিন্তু এখনও কলম্বাস তাদের দেখা পেলেন না, সব সময়ই তারা দ্বীপ থেকে দ্বীপে, আরও একটু দূরের কোন দ্বীপে সরে যেতে থাকে !!

    ১৩ই জানুয়ারী, ১৪৯৩: একটা অভাবনীয় ঘটনা ঘটে। কল্পনা থেকে Cannibal-এর বাস্তবে দেখা মেলে !

    ১৩ই ডিসেম্বর, ১৪৯৩: দেশে ফেরার যাত্রা শুরু হয়েছে। এস্পানোলার একটা অংশে কলম্বাস ও তার দলবল এসেছে। এই অবস্থায় দলের লোকেরা স্থলভূমি থেকে অন্য একদল ইন্ডিয়ানদের মধ্যে থেকে কলম্বাসের কাছে একজন লোককে নিয়ে আসে যার সম্বন্ধে লগবুকে লেখেন and he came and the Admiral says that he was very much more ugly in the face than the other Indians they had seen:his face was all smutted with charcoal although everywhere the Indians were accustomed to stain themselves different colours. He wore his hair very long and drawn back and tied behind and afterward placed in a "rebecilla" of parrots' feathers, and he was naked like the others. অন্য নেটিভদের থেকে আলাদা বলেই হয়ত The Admiral judged that he must have been one of the Caribs who eat men। অ্যাডমিরাল লোকটিকে Cariba-দের সম্বন্ধে প্রশ্ন করলে he made signs to the east, near there, which the Admiral says he saw yesterday before .... and the Indian told him that there was a great deal of gold in that country, pointing out the poop of the caravel which was very large and indicating that there were pieces as large as that.

    (কালো মানুষগুলোও ইতিমধ্যে চালাক হয়ে ঊঠেছিল মনে হয়। কলম্বাস যে হন্যে হয়ে সোনা খুঁজছে আর সাথে সাথে নরখাদকও খুঁজছে জেনে গিয়েই হয়ত এই দুটোর ব্যাপারেই দূরের কোন দ্বীপ দেখিয়ে দিত !)

    লোকটি Matinino বলে আর একটি দ্বীপের কথাও বলে, যেটি Carib দ্বীপের পূর্বদিকে এবং যেখানে কোন পুরুষ থাকে না, শুধু মেয়েদেরই বাসস্থান সেই দ্বীপ। The Admiral says that he had been told of these islands by many persons some days before. The Admiral says further that in the islands they had passed the inhabitants were in great fear of the Carib and in some they called it Caniba, but in Espanola they called it Carib. And that they must he a very bold people since they go to all the islands and eat the people they are able to capture. । পড়ে মনে হয়, কলম্বাস যেন Cannibal সংক্রান্ত সন্দেহগ্রস্ততা থেকে মুক্তিই পেয়েছেন, মোটামুটি নি:সন্দেহ তাদের "অসভ্য" আচরণের ব্যাপারে।

    (অসভ্য আচরণটা ঠিক কোথায়? মানুষ খাওয়াতেই শুধু? নাকি তাদের প্রতিরোধী ও যুদ্ধবাজ মনোভাবের জন্যও?)

    লোকটিকে নৌকা করে স্থলভূমিতে পাঠিয়ে দেওয়ার পরে, এদের "অসভ্য" আচরণের প্রমাণ মেলে। কেনাকাটা নিয়ে জাহাজের লোকজনের সাথে বিবাদ বাঁধে এবং Having sold two bows they did not wish to give any more, but rather they prepared to attack the Christians and capture them.     ১৫ই জানুয়ারী: ঝামেলার পর ঐ জায়গায় থেকে আর লাভ নেই, কিন্তু লোভ আর যায় না। on the island of Carib there was a great deal of copper and in Matinino, although it would be difficult to obtain it in Carib because he says the people eat human flesh. দ্বীপটা এবার যেন দেখাও যাচ্ছে।
    and he says the island of the Caribs appeared from where he was and that he had determined to go there, since it is on his course ।

    কিন্তু স্পেনের দিকে নিয়ে যাওয়ার হাওয়াটা প্রবল হয়ে ওঠে -

    উপরন্তু Matinino দ্বীপেও যাওয়া হয় না, যেখানে শুধুই মেয়েরা থাকে (ইচ্ছে ছিল ৫-৬ জনকে সঙ্গে করে ধরে নিয়ে যাবেন) এবং এরকম ঘটে যে at a certain time of year the men came to these women from the said Isla de Carib, which he says was ten or twelve leagues from them, and if they gave birth to a boy they sent him to the island of the men and if to a girl they kept her with them, ।

    অধরাই থেকে যায় cannibal-দের সাথে মোলাকাত হওয়া।

  • অ! নিকোলাস কেজের সেই মেয়েদের দ্বীপের সিন্মাটা(নাম মনে নেই) যারা মধু চাষ করে আর ছেলে ধরতে যায় শহরে, তাকে ডেকে এনে আবার ক্ষী এক পুজো তে মেরে টেরে ফেলে, সে গপ্পের উৎস এই। ক্ষী অবস্তা!

    ভাল করে গুনলে দেখা যাবে, প্রথম যাত্রার লগবুকে, কলম্বাস কিছু না হোক শ'খানেক বার "সোনা" কথাটার উল্লেখ করেন। আর বার পঞ্চাশ অন্তত "ঈশ্বর" শব্দটা। যদিও ঈশ্বর সর্বত্র বিরাজমান, কিন্তু স্বর্ণপ্রাপ্তি বিশেষ ঘটে না। ঐ একটু-আধ্‌টু, আর অন্য দ্বীপের দিকে নেটিভদের অঙ্গুলিনির্দেশ। সোনা যেমন অধরাই থেকে যায় তেমন অধরা থেকে যায় নরখাদক মানুষেরাও। থেকে যায় কলম্বাসের কল্পনাতেই। কিন্তু তাতে কী হোল?

    ফিরতি পথে, সম্রাটের অর্থমন্ত্রী Luis De Sant Angel -কে লেখা চিঠিতে New World-এর বর্ণনার সঙ্গে কলম্বাস এও যোগ করেন As for monsters, I have found not trace of them except at the point in the second isle as one enters the Indies, which is inhabited by a people considered in all the isles as most ferocious, who eat human flesh.।

    যে দ্বীপে পৌছনই হয়নি এবং লোকগুলোকে দেখাই হয়নি, তাদের সম্বন্ধে নরখাদক তকমাটা লাগানো থাকে কী এই জন্যই যে পরবর্তী সময়ে এদের "দাস" করে ব্যবহার করা যাবে বলে? কী কী সামগ্রী এই স্থান থেকে নিয়ে যাওয়া যেতে পারে তার তালিকা দিতে গিয়ে ঐ চিঠিতেই লেখেন their Highnesses will see that I can give them as much gold as they desire, if they will give me a little assistance, spices, cotton, as much as their Highnesses may command to be shipped.....and as many slaves as they choose to send for।

    ১৪৯৪ সালের ৩০ শে জানুয়ারী, যখন দ্বিতীয় যাত্রার অঙ্গ হিসেবে কলম্বাস আবার এসেছেন নব আবিষ্কৃত ভূখন্ডে, তখন স্পেনের উদ্দেশ্যে যাত্রা করা একটি জাহাজ মারফৎ রাজা-রাণীর উদ্দেশ্যে কলম্বাস আর একটি চিঠি লেখেন। দাবী-দাওয়া আর কত ভাল কাজ তিনি করছেন সেই ফিরিস্তিতে ভর্তি সেই চিঠি। খাবার পাঠাতে বলা, ওয়াইন শেষ হয়ে গেছে, তার ব্যবস্থা করতে বলা, লোকজনের অসুখ সংক্রান্ত খবর, ভবিষ্যতে কী কী পাওয়া যেতে পারে ইত্যাদির বিবরণ নিয়ে ভর্তি সেই চিঠিতেও কলম্বাস আবারও caanibal-দের উল্লেখ করেন। নানা ঝামেলার মধ্যে পড়ে কল্পনার ঐ cannibal-রা সংখ্যায় ও প্রভাবে যেন আরও বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছে। ফলে লেখেন - But as amongst all these islands, those inhabited by these cannibals are the largest and most populous, it must be evident that nothing but good can come from sending to Spain men and women who may thus one day be led to abondon their barbarous custom of eating their fellow-creatures। কিছু পরে আরও লেখেন that for the good of the
    souls of the said cannibals, and even of the inhabitants of this
    island, the thought has suggested itself to us, that the greater the
    number that are sent over to Spain the better...    ।

    কলম্বাস নির্মিত এই মানুষখেকো ও অননুগত cannibal-দের বিবরণ এতই আকর্ষণীয় ও প্রভাবশালী ছিল (যা ইউরোপে ছড়িয়ে পড়েছিল কলম্বাসেরই লগবুক ও চিঠি মারফৎ) যে ১৫০৩ সালে রাণী ইসাবেলা একটি নির্দেশ জারি করে বলেন -

    For the present I give license and power to all and sundry persons who may go by my orders to the Islands and Tierra Firme of the Ocean Sea discovered up to the present, as well
    as to those who may go to discover other Islands and Tierra Firme,
    that if said Cannibals continue to resist and do not wish to admit
    and receive to their lands the Captains and men who may be on such voyages by my orders, nor to hear them in order to be taught our
    Sacred Catholic Faith and to be in my service and obedience, they may
    be captured and taken to these my Kingdoms and Domains and to other parts and places and be sold"

    শেষ হয় cannibal-দের নিয়ে কলম্বাসের কল্পনা ও নির্মাণ।

    শুরু হয় cannibalism নিয়ে ইউরোপের সরকারী ডিস্কোর্স নির্মাণ।

    প্রশস্ত হয় সমগ্র আমেরিকা ও আফ্রিকার মানুষদের দাস বানানোর প্রক্রিয়ার।

    প্রভুদের শব্দ চয়ন আর কল্পনাই ঠিক করে দেয়, কোন মানুষ কীরকম।

  • কলাম্বাসের স্পেনের অর্থমত্রীকে লেখা চিঠির সাথে আজকাল দিনের রিসার্চ গ্রান্ট লেখার মিল খুঁজে পেলাম। বিজ্ঞানী গবেষণার জন্য পয়সা চেয়ে চুপি পরায়, আর কলাম্বাস পরের এক্সপিডিশানের জন্য পয়সা চেয়ে টুপি পরিয়েছিল।

    ১৪৯৩ সালে, পোপ আলেক্সান্ডার VI একটা ডিক্রী জারি করে, ইউরোপের বাইরের নব আবিষ্কৃত জমি-জায়গা স্পেন আর পর্তুগালের মধ্যে ভাগ করে দেন। এই ভাগাভাগিটা ইংল্যান্ড আর ফ্রান্স কোন দিনই মানেনি। ডিক্রী অনুযায়ী পর্তুগালের ভাগেও জায়গা-জমি কম পড়েছিল বলে বছর খানেক পরে, স্পেনের সাথে পর্তুগালের একটা মনমতো চুক্তি হয়।

    অতএব অধিকার পুরো মাত্রাতেই ছিল !

    প্রথম যাত্রা থেকে ফিরতি পথে, কলম্বাস প্রথমে লিসবনে পৌছন এবং পর্তুগালের রাজার সাথে দেখা হয়। সব শুনে, পর্তুগালের রাজা, ১৪৮১-র একটা Papal Bull-এর অধিকার বলে New World-এর ওপর পর্তুগালের দাবী জানান। ইতিমধ্যে কলম্বাসের আবিষ্কারের খবর স্পেনে পৌছলে, রাণী ইসাবেলা তৎক্ষনাৎ ঐ খবর পোপকে জানান এবং পরবর্তী সময়ে স্পেনের পক্ষে Papal Bull জারি হয়।

    এ ব্যাপারে আমি একটা তত্ব খাড়া করেছি। স্পেনের পক্ষে যে পোপ একটু বেশী টাল খেলেন তার পেছনে অন্যান্য কারণের সাথে নিশ্চয় স্পেনের Catholic Zeal-এরও অবদান আছে। যার প্রমাণ, ১৪৯২-র দুটো ঘটনা। প্রথমত, মুসলমানদের হঠিয়ে গ্রানাডা শহর স্পেনের ক্যাথলিক রাজার অধীনস্থ হওয়া এবং দ্বিতীয়ত গ্রানাডা শহর দখলের কিছু দিনের মধ্যেই স্পেন থেকে সমস্ত ইহুদীদের বিতাড়ন।

    ইন্টারনেটে খোঁজাখুঁজি করে দেখলাম, পোপ আলেক্সান্ডারের এডিক্টটাতে, গ্রানাডা শহর Saracen-দের থেকে মুক্ত করার জন্য রাজা ফার্দিনান্দ ও রাণী ইসাবেলাকে প্রশংসা করা হয়েছে !

  • এইখানে আমার একটা রিজয়েন্ডার আছে। আমার ঠিক না। একজন স্প্যানিশ পন্ডিতের। তিনি লিখেছেন, যে, লগবুকের ইংরিজি ভার্সান পড়ে এই ব্যাপারটা বোঝা যাবেনা। ক্যারিব/ক্যানিব আসলে একই কথা। বাজারে এটার আরও একটা ভার্সান চালু আছে সেটা হল ক্যালিবান। সেটা শেক্সপিয়র ব্যবহার করেছেন। স্প্যানিশ থেকে ইংরিজিতে আসতে গিয়ে একদিকে ক্যারিব থেকে ক্যালিবান হয়ে ক্যানিবাল হয়েছে। অন্য দিকে ক্যারিব থেকে ক্যারিবিয়ান (মানে ঐ ওয়েস্ট ইন্ডিজ আর কি)হয়েছে। ক্যারিবিয়ান আর ক্যানিবাল, দুইই আদতে নাকি একই জিনিস।

    শব্দের এই রূপ পরিবর্তনের পুরো ব্যাপারটা আমার ঠিক মনে পড়ছেনা, স্প্যানিশ না জানায় ভালো বুঝিওনি। কার লেখা তাও মনে পড়ছেনা। খুঁজে পেলে টুকে দেব।

    N ABOUT 1484, to within a year or so, a pilot born in Huelva, in the county of Niebla, called Alonso Sanchez de Huelva, had a small ship with which he traded by sea and used to carry wares from Spain to the Canaries, where he sold them profitably and brought back to the island products from the Canaries and carried them to the isle of Madeira, thence returning to Spain laden with sugar and conserves. The crew suffered great hardships in the storm, for they could neither eat nor sleep. After this lengthy period the wind fell and they found themselves near an island. It is not known for sure which it was, but it is suspected that it was the one now called Santo Domingo. However, it is worthy of note that the wind that drove the ship so furiously and violently could only have been the solano, or easterly—for the isle of Santo Domingo is to the westward of the Canaries—and this wind usually appeases rather than raises storms on that voyage. But when the Almighty Lord wishes to show His great mercy, He mysteriously draws the most necessary effects from opposite causes, as He drew water from the rock and sight for the blind from the mud placed on his eyes, so that these may clearly be seen to be the works of divine mercy and goodness. He also displayed His clemency in sending the true light of His Gospel to all the New World which had such need of it, since its peoples lived, or rather perished, in the darkness of the most barbarous and bestial paganism and idolatry, as we shall see in the course of our story.

    The pilot leapt ashore, took the altitude and wrote a detailed account of all he saw and all that befell him at sea on the outward and inward voyages, and having taken on board water and fuel, he returned, sailing blind and without knowing the way any more than when he had come, so that he took much longer than was necessary. And because of the delay they ran out of water and supplies. For this reason and because of the great privations they had suffered on both journeys, they began to sicken and die, and of seventeen men who left Spain, no more than five reached Terceira, among them the pilot Alonso Sanchez de Huelva. They stayed at the house of the famous Genoese Christopher Columbus, because they knew he was a great pilot and cosmographer and made seamen's charts. He received them kindly and entertained them lavishly so as to learn the things that had happened on the long and strange voyage they said they had undergone. But they arrived so enfeebled by hardships that Christopher Columbus could not restore them to health despite his attentions, and they all died in his house, leaving him the heir to the hardships that had caused their death.
