    The special branch (SB) of the Kolkata police has launched a witch-hunt against university students who were branded as 'CPI(M) cadres' and 'Maoists' by West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. The statement came from Mamata when they asked her some uncomfortable questions during an interaction organised by a national television channel on Friday evening.

    Many of them are students of reputed institutions, including Presidency University and Jadavpur University. They had participated in the interactive programme at the Town Hall. Unable to give any convincing replies to their questions on Park Street rape case and JU professor Ambikesh Mahapatra’s arrests, Ms Banerjee had branded them as 'CPI(M) cadres' and 'Maoists' before storming out of the programme.

    According to sources, the special branch called up the Kolkata office of the channel later and sought the names of the students to establish Ms Banerjee’s claims. “Failing to get the details from the channel office, the SB officials on Saturday started collecting the students’ photographs to ascertain their political and ideological affiliation/loyalty. A list of around 10 students has been prepared,” a senior SB official revealed, adding that the youth might be questioned in the future. (Source: The Asian Age)

    New Delhi: On Friday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called Presidency University student Taniya Bharadwaj a CPI(M) cadre and a Maoist for asking a question about the conduct of senior state ministers and officials over crimes against women. The question was asked at an open house session with the Chief Minister, conducted by CNN-IBN to mark one year of the Trinamool Congress's coming to power in West Bengal. An angry Banerjee castigated the audience for asking 'CPI(M) questions' and 'Maoist questions' and stormed out, refusing to participate further.

    Dear 'Simple Man',

    On being asked a simple question, you acquired a complicated avatar. We all went to the CNN-IBN question-answer session on Friday, May 18, at the Town Hall expecting to hear some heated exchanges, but it got too hot to handle.

    You, the most important person in West Bengal, labeled me and the rest of the audience 'Maoist and CPM cadres'. What exactly did we do to deserve this honour? We asked you questions. I asked you whether affiliates of your party, specifically minister Madan Mitra and MP Arabul Islam, who wield power, should act, or should have acted, more responsibly.

    Like many others, I was also greatly disturbed when Madan Mitra pronounced his own judgment on a rape victim before the police were done investigating. This woman, whose character was assassinated, is an Anglo-Indian, a member of the minority community. Thus, if we were to even forget about sensitivity, the question of political correctness still hangs over his conduct.

    A few months ago, this very same man had misbehaved with policemen who had stopped his car on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass as part of its routine. As for the Arabul Islam case, it is still making headlines.

    I asked you something that had been on the minds of most people around me, people who voted for 'paribartan' (change). Is this what we expect of our leaders? The ones who set examples and whom people follow. This is all that I wanted to know. What I got to know, instead, is that in West Bengal, asking a question can be the equivalent of being a Maoist.

    'Simple man', you claimed with pride on stage that you're not a feminist.

    That proclamation did not surprise us, especially after the Katwa and Park Street cases. You also spoke of democracy. The answers you gave to the questions you took before mine were sprinkled with words like ‘people’, 'democracy', and 'Bengal'.

    But one of the most important features of a true democracy, which I have learnt as a student of political science, is freedom of expression. This freedom is the one that allows an individual to express oneself, to not have to mince words out of fear of authority. It involves enjoying a chuckle or two at cartoon about important public figures.
    Sadly, there seems to be a gradual failure in this aspect of the democratic machinery in the state. And just like I won’t become a Maoist simply because you called me one, the state too won’t epitomize democracy unless it is truly so in all spheres. All said and done, what you did was in haste and it made me the centre of attention. And as you stomped off in fury, you automatically assumed the role of the spoilsport.

    It would have been so much more ‘simple’ had you just answered my question, or even said “No comments” and moved on. The question became so important because you chose to make it important.

    You have spoken of 'brain drain' so many times. I hold offers from the University College, London and the School of Oriental and African Studies to study development and administration. I too will probably leave, and now you know the reason why. Had you stayed on, it would have been fun. And you would have honestly been 'a Chief Minister with a difference'. The role of your office as Chief Minister is to aggregate interest – you should at the least have heard us all out.

    এস , এনার ও যদি ফল হাতে নাতে হয় তো ভালো। কিন্তু মুশকিল যে সেরকম লক্ষণ বিশেষ দেখছি না। আর এ মহিলা কিন্তু প্রথম থেকেই এরকম অশালীন, মিথ্যাবাদী ইগোইস্ট, ভেবে দেখুন। হাতে power পেয়ে বিগড়ে গেছেন, সেরকম কেস নয়। এনার ফলোয়ার রা ওই মারব কাটব ক্রুদ ইমেজারির জন্য ই এনার ফলোয়ার। কাজেই হয়ত যে "পরিবর্তন" কামী ভোট পেয়েছিল সেটা একটু কমবে, শিক্ষিত মধ্যবিত্তের ভোট একটু কমবে, কিন্তু তদ্দিনে মফস্বল এলাকার সিপিএম মেশিনারি তিনো য় রূপান্তরিত হয়ে এক্সট্রা ব্যাক আপ এর জন্য রেডি। তা ছাড়া গুরুতর প্রশ্ন হলো, এই মাল কে নামালে, কোন নতুন মাল আসবে? এর পরে, কলার তোলা, দ্যাখ কেমন লাগে সিপিএম আসবে আবার? ওহ !

    শুনেছি দেশভাগের পরে উদ্বাস্তুরা যখন চরম অমানবিক অবস্থায় দিন কাটাতে বাধ্যে হতেন বিভিন্ন উদ্বাস্তু শিবিরে তখনও 'ঐ উদ্বাস্তুরা ভীষণ নোংরা, ভীষন অলস' ইত্যাদি লেবেল বেশ চটজলদি মেরে দেওয়া হত। অথচ পরিস্কার পরিচ্ছন্ন থাকার বা কাজকর্ম করবার সুযোগ প্রায় ছিলই না।

    এরপরে বামফ্রন্টের আমলেও প্রথম বেশ অনেকদিন পর্যন্ত 'কেন্দ্রে চক্রান্ত' আর 'কেন্দ্র দিচ্ছে না'র ভুত ঘুরে বেড়াত সব সভাসমিতিতে। অন্তত ৮৫ সাল পর্যন্ত তো নিয়মিত শুনতাম। এছাড়া মরিচঝাঁপির উদ্বাস্তুদেরও 'বাংলাদেশের চর' এবং সুন্দরবনে আরেকটা দেশ বানাবার চেষ্টা করছে 'ভারতবিরোধী' ইত্যাদি লেবেল মারা হয়েছিল, গুলি চালানোর আগে বলে মনোরঞ্জন ব্যপারী এবং আরো কারো কারো লেখায় পড়ছিলাম।

    কাজেই আমাদের জাতীয় ঐতিহ্য অনুসারে যেই ক্ষমতায় যাক সে লেবেলিং করবেই।
